- In order to get information about the African American Civil War Memorial dedicated Sept. 8, 1996, See the Civil War in Charleston page for the best online information. The National Park Service summary says "Memorial to African Americans Who Served with Union Forces in the Civil War Authorized Oct. 14, 1992, the memorial would contain the inscriptions on stainless steel plaques of some 185,000 names of African-Americans who served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. A commemorative bronze sculpture will be included in the design. It will be located above the Green Line Metro Station at 10th and U Streets, NW. The District of Columbia is sponsoring the memorial with the cooperative efforts of the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority. The memorial sculpture was approved by the Commission of Fine Arts in March 1995. Further refinement of the memorial design is scheduled to occur in the fall of 1995.
